Qingdao International Airport is situated at the Chengyang District in the Qingdao City, which is 23 km from the city centre. The airport terminal area of 120,000 SQM is able to accommodate an annual demand of 18 million passengers and has the capacity for 5,120 passengers during peak hours. The airport security is of 4E grade and is able to meet a fully loaded Boeing 747 large aircraft.
At present, there are 34 domestic and foreign airlines including Air China, China Eastern, China Southern Airlines, Lufthansa, Korean Air, Asiana, All Nippon Airways, Dragonair and UPS companies; in Qingdao airport in operation. Qingdao Airport Group has signed the New Qingdao Airport project with a syndicate of 13 local Chinese banks on 8 April 2016. The New Qingdao Airport project is expected to involve a total investment of USD 6.9 billion. The new airport will be constructed as a category 4F standard and positioned as a gateway to Japan and South Korea as well as a regional hub airport. The airport’s proposed 478,000 SQM terminal is expected to have capacity for 35 million passengers with 500,000 tonnes of cargo and 298,000 aircraft movements per annum. In the long term to year 2045, the airport is expected to have cover a land area of 30.7 sq km and constructs an additional two near runways while its terminal area will reach 700,000 SQM.
